Cove Audio Baby Monitor: Reliable Range Without an App
A deliberately simple audio monitor from a small brand that has chosen not to add a camera, an app or a subscription. Tested for five weeks in a three-storey house with a garden. Range and battery life are the standouts.
Verdict
The Cove does one thing and does it dependably. Audio is clear, range covered a three-storey house and a 30-metre garden without dropouts, and the parent unit ran for 22 hours on a charge. There is no video, no app and no way to check in from outside the house, which is the point. Recommended for parents who want a monitor that works every time and never asks for a password.
Strengths
- No dropouts across 35 nights, including in the garden
- 22 hours parent-unit battery, measured
- Clear audio with adjustable sensitivity and a visual sound level bar
- No Wi-Fi, no account, no subscription, no data collection
Weaknesses
- No video, no temperature sensor, no lullabies
- Parent unit belt clip is flimsy
- Only one parent unit can be paired
The case for audio only
Most baby monitors sold online now include a camera and a smartphone app. They are useful, and they also introduce Wi-Fi dependence, firmware updates, account logins and, in several documented cases, security problems. Cove, a small brand selling direct, has taken the opposite position: a two-unit audio monitor on a dedicated digital radio link, with no internet connection at all. It costs 89 US dollars.
This review is written for parents who have already decided they do not want video, or who want a dependable backup to a video system. If you want to see the cot from your phone, this is not the product.
What is in the box
Two units: a mains-powered nursery unit with a microphone and a small night light, and a rechargeable parent unit with a speaker, a five-segment sound level indicator, volume and sensitivity controls, a talk-back button and a belt clip. Both use USB-C. The box also includes two cables, one adapter and a two-page instruction sheet, which is all the product needs.
Range and reliability
The house used for testing has three floors and a garden extending about 30 metres from the back wall. The nursery unit was on the top floor. Over 35 nights the parent unit maintained a connection in every room of the house, in the garden to the far fence and at the front of the house by the street. The out-of-range warning sounded only once, when I deliberately walked about 60 metres down the road. On re-entering range the link restored within three seconds.
There was no interference from the household Wi-Fi network, a nearby microwave or a neighbour's monitor of a different brand, which the digital link is designed to prevent. This was the most reliable connection of the four monitors I have tested.
Sound quality and sensitivity
Audio is clear enough to distinguish between a fuss and a cry from another floor. The sensitivity control has five levels. At the middle setting the unit transmitted crying and talking but not breathing or the sound of a fan, which is the balance most parents want. At the highest setting it transmitted continuously. The sound level bar on the parent unit lights up with noise even when the volume is muted, which is useful in a room where others are sleeping.
Talk-back works with a press-and-hold button and the speaker on the nursery unit is quiet enough to soothe rather than startle.
Battery
Cove claims 20 hours for the parent unit. I measured 22 hours and 10 minutes with the display at default brightness and the unit receiving normal night-time sound. A full charge from empty took just under three hours. Battery health after five weeks of nightly charging was unchanged in practice. The nursery unit is mains only and has no battery, which Cove states is a deliberate decision to avoid a lithium cell in the nursery.
Build
Both units are matte white plastic with soft edges and no visible screws. The buttons are firm and the volume dial has clear steps. The one weak component is the belt clip, which is thin and flexed when clipped to a jeans pocket. It did not break in five weeks but I would not rely on it. The nursery unit's night light is a warm, dim glow that is either on or off; there is no dimmer.
What you give up
There is no camera, no room temperature display, no lullabies, no remote access and no way to pair a second parent unit for a two-parent household with separate rooms. Cove's product page is upfront about all of this. If any of those features matter to you, a monitor at a similar price will include them and add a Wi-Fi dependency in return.

Customer experience
Delivery took three days in a plain recyclable box with minimal plastic. An email question about pairing a second parent unit was answered within a day, confirming it is not supported and suggesting a second complete set if needed. Returns are accepted within 45 days, which is longer than most baby product brands offer.
Final verdict
The Cove Audio Baby Monitor is a well-executed answer to a question many parents are asking: is there a monitor that simply works without an account, an app or a camera? Range, reliability and battery life are all excellent. The belt clip and the single parent unit are minor complaints. For parents who want audio only, it is the monitor I would buy.
